Earthquakes: Week overview 18 December - 24 December


This week, around 350 earthquakes were measured by the SIL-system of the Icelandic Met Office. This is similar to last week, but considerably less than the two weeks before that. The largest earthquakes measured were in Bárðarbunga, two of which came early morning of 20th of December, one at 04:57 of size M4.1 and the latter at 05:29 of size M4.4. Another one of size M4.1 came half-an-hour before midnight of the 23rd of December. Two earthquakes around and above 3 were also measured in the Hengill area the morning of the 23rd. The first one at 05:39, M3.0, and the latter at 05:43, M3.4. The Met Office received reports of the larger one being felt both in Hveragerði and in the Capital Area. Around 33 earthquakes were measured in Öræfajökull this week, but all of them were smaller than M1.5 and one earthquake of size M0.6 was measured southwest of Hekla.
