Eruption would be neither big nor dangerous

An eruption near Keilir, if it were to occur, would neither be large nor pass over quickly, it would be primarily characterized by lava production but the explosive activity would be rather mild. This is what Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson, a geophysicist, and Þorvaldur Þórðarson, a volcanologist, said in Kastljós tonight. New measurements today showed that the possibility of an eruption is one of the scenarios that must be taken into account, as well as scenarios of either a stronger earthquake or that the earthquake will die out in the next few days.

Both Þorvaldur and Magnús Tumi emphasized that although such magma collection or eruptions were among the possibilities that had to be kept open, this did not mean that there would be an eruption. They laughed when asked if they thought the process was more likely to end with an eruption or not. Magnús Tumi said that in the end it would erupt, but it could happen in one to two hundred years. An eruption in the northern part of Fagradalsfjall, south of Keilir, would not lead to a very large ash fall, said Þorvaldur. He said there might be some ash fall that could cause discomfort as well as gas emissions would no doubt be something.
